In my 11 years as a speech and language therapist serving urban public schools, I have learned that kids thrive academically when they have a strong social emotional foundation. Teaching students empathy, compassion, gratitude, and good communication skills empowers kids to be their best selves and to develop and maintain healthy relationships. Research draws a strong correlation between social emotional learning (SEL) and academic achievement. The Peacemaker kids project was inspired by the work of Marshall Rosenburg, who founded the Nonviolent Communication movement. It was designed to support students and teachers in an urban elementary school in Providence, RI to address the regular occurrence of verbal and physical violence at school. The pendants and lesson plan have been an effective tool in transforming conflicts into peaceful learning moments. Our mission is to share the Peacemaker Kids resources with educators, peace advocates, parents, and students everywhere.
